Some people consider how environmentally-friendly their roofing materials are, while others think about the longevity. You also have to think about the weather and what kind of environment your exterior is protecting against. Here are some characteristics of commonly used roofing materials: Asphalt: Asphalt is one of the most popular kinds of roofing for homes due to their variety and cost options. For cold weather and wind resistance it’s better to have it made from organic paper fiber mat, and if you’re looking for resistance against fire and moisture, fiberglass is recommended. They have shorter lifespans than other roofing materials and are known to be not very environmentally friendly due to their petroleum-based nature. Wood: When using wood as your roofing material, it’s best to go with Redwood or Cedar. These woods are fortified to resist harsh weather and will protect your house against snow, storms and heavy rain. You have to check with your local building codes if you want this type of roof as it is prone to catching fire. There are wood shingles treated for fire-resistance if you’re willing to pay the extra cost. Metal: Choices range from zinc alloy, aluminum, copper, or steel. Steel exteriors are either painted or coated with zinc. Copper roofing acquires a protective green patina as time passes. The metal may be created with recycled materials and can be recycled again when being replaced. Metal roofs absorb roughly 30% less heat than asphalt. They are also very durable, lasting twice as long as asphalt or wood. Slate: Slate roofing can be made from natural slate rock or synthetic material. The natural version is brittle, heavy, and very expensive, but also extremely durable. They need little maintenance and if taken care of properly, they last for several decades. The synthetic version also shares these qualities but to a lesser degree. It has good resistance against wind and fire but should only be used for steep sloped exteriors. Clay or Concrete Tile: Clay is costlier than concrete but it also reflects 50% of the sun’s heat away from your home and some people prefer it for the aesthetics. Both materials are durable, but also heavy. Your house needs to have the structural support to be able to use either material. You will need to consult a professional to see if the material is appropriate to use as roofing for your home, note that installation is also quite expensive but it needs to be done properly. Once you’ve chosen the type of material you want to have, contact an A+ Rated Roofer in Brookline to install your roof for you. Some people get carried away with their DIY projects and try to install their own roof, not only is this dangerous but it can void the warranty on the materials of your roof. Be sure to get an accredited roofer to avoid problems such as leaks or poor insulation. |
