Green roofing is good for the environment and has a pleasant aesthetic appeal to it. Technological innovations have allowed us to integrate this old Scandinavian practice into modern structures. The Components of Green Exteriors: Green or Ecological roofing allow plant life to grow on top of them. Whereas the traditional purpose of roofing was to drive water away from the surface of a shelter, Green exteriors actually hold water in its structure. Green Roofing has become popular in Germany where as many as 10% of buildings have them. The material is composed of several layers of covering, each with its specific function: First Layer: The foundation of a green roof is a base layer on top of a substrate which provides a waterproof seal to the structure. The material for this could be made of a synthetic membrane or metal tray roofing. There could be several sub-layers within this which include insulation. Second Layer: A drainage and storage layer to ensure the roof doesn’t hold too much water. Third Layer: This layer contains filters and a membrane for protecting roots which also stops them from overgrowing and puncturing the waterproof seal which would cause leaks inside the building’s structure. Final layer: The outermost layer contains the growing catalyst on which plants are nurtured. Green exteriors come in varying complexities, allowing for certain types of plant life to live on them. There are three broad categories in which most Green exteriors fall under: Extensive: Grasses, mosses, herbs and other light plants are grown on this roof. It is the cheapest and simplest type of green roofing to install. There is only a shallow growing medium with a depth of 60-200mm. The limit for the weight of the plant medium is between 60-150kg per square meter. It can be used only if the roof has little or no foot traffic. Some maintenance is required for this roofing. Intensive: This type of green roofing requires an extensive structure to support its heavy weight. The growing medium is about 150-400mm in depth and is meant to support 180-500kgs per square meter in weight. Many things can be grown on this roof: flowers, shrubs, bushes, and small trees. This roofing is used to create “sky gardens” or park gardens. Bio Diverse Green: These are designed to be self-sustaining to replicate a natural ecosystem. It is designed in a way to create a livable environment for different species. Asides from vegetation planted there on purpose, it is meant to grow plants whose seeds were carried in by the wind or animals. It was created with the intention of providing a habitat for threatened species. For residential houses, extensive green roofing is used due to structural limitations. These have several benefits such as a positive ecological contribution, cost-savings, and aesthetic appeal. For more information about green roofing in Abington contact us today. |
